A "Crippling" Nationwide Rail Strike Is Still On The Table After Teamsters' BMWE Division Rejects Biden-Brokered Deal
With only four of 11 unions ratifying tentative contracts, if a strike occurs, it will be in mid-November, after the mid-term elections.
QUICK FACTS:
A majority of voting members of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division of the Teamsters has rejected the tentative deal brokered by the Biden Administration in September.
“Railroaders do not feel valued,” stated BMWE division president Tony D. Cardwell. “They resent the fact that management holds no regard for their quality of life, illustrated by their stubborn reluctance to provide a higher quantity of paid time off, especially for sickness.”
In total, 11,845 BMWED members submitted ballots, 6,646 against ratification and 5,100 approving the tentative agreement. 99 remaining ballots were submitted blank or voided for some other user error.
If the union strikes it will not do so until after the mid-term elections, when Congress reconvenes in mid November.
