California Governor Gavin Newsom has chosen Laphonza Butler, the current president of EMILY’S List to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who passed away last week.
Butler, who currently resides in Maryland, has a home in California, and will be switching her voter registration back to California, reported NBC News.
Butler is also the former head of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 2015, the largest union in the state.
“As president of SEIU California, she worked closely with then-Gov. Jerry Brown on policies like hiking the minimum wage to $15 per hour and raising taxes for wealthy Californians,” reported Politco. “She also served on the University of California Board of Regents, to which she was appointed by Brown in 2018 before stepping down in 2021.”
“She has also been a longtime ally of Vice President Kamala Harris, a member of the University of California Board of Regents and the director of public policy and campaigns in North America for Airbnb,” according to NBC News.
Butler will serve until California voters decide on who the next senator will be in the November 2024 election.
