President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, an Oregon Republican, to lead the Department of Labor, the New York Post is reporting.
Chavez-DeRemer was recommended to Trump by Teamsters’ president Sean O’Brien and garnered the approval of American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten.
Chavez-DeRemer was one of only a few House Republicans who supported the pro-union PRO Act, as well as the nationalization of public-sector labor laws.
“As a member of Congress, Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R–Ore.) teamed up with Vice President Kamala Harris and teachers union bosses to push a proposal that would effectively override state-level reforms to limit the power of public sector unions—like those championed by Republicans in Wisconsin and Florida,” reported Reason’s Eric Boehm.
“Lori has worked tirelessly with both Business and Labor to build America’s workforce, and support the hardworking men and women of America,” Trump said in his announcement.
With her prior support of the anti-business PRO Act, it is not known how many Republican Senators will vote to confirm her nomination. However, at a time when many of Trump’s nominations are likely to face opposition from Senate Democrats, it is likely that Chavez-DeRemer will not.
