More Starbucks Cafes Have Filed Petitions To Oust Starbucks Workers United This Week
So far, the NLRB has not allowed a single location to have a decertification election.
Baristas at Starbucks cafes in Lakewood, CA; Beaverton, OR as well as Tallahassee, FL have filed petitions with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to hold elections at their respective locations to decertify Starbucks Workers United, the SEIU-affiliated union that has successfully unionized more than 300 Starbucks cafes over the last 18 months.
These petitions are in addition to prior petitions asking the NLRB to hold decertification elections, including in such cities as Oklahoma City, OK; Augusta, GA; Rochester, Buffalo and New York City, New York.
However, up until this week, for each decertification petition filed, the union and NLRB have either “blocked” or dismissed the baristas’ efforts, drawing ire from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, a non-profit legal foundation which has been assisting Starbucks employees.
“We remain concerned that the NLRB has yet to allow partners to exercise their desire for a decertification election and, in some cases, has wholly dismissed their petitions,” Starbucks stated on its website.
It is unknown at this time whether Starbucks Workers United and the NLRB will allow the employees at the three newest locations to exercise their right to vote.
