An update to the ongoing labor dispute between the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) and its unionized staff in Washington, D.C.:
Following a 24-hour strike by the UFCW’s unionized staff late last month, the UFCW Guild (which is part of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild) stated on X that UFCW management had given the union its “last, best, and final proposal” on Wednesday.
In its post, the union stated:
“When we returned to the bargaining table after our one-day strike, UFCW greeted us with what they claim is their ‘last, best, and final proposal.’ Aside from the lack of substantive changes from the previous proposal the Guild unanimously voted down, UFCW refused to schedule additional bargaining sessions until we voted…again.” [Emphasis in original.']
In response, Guild members held a voting party and promptly rejected the UFCW’s offer(see below).
The union employees’ prior contract [in PDF] with the UFCW expired in January, and the UFCW and the union staff operated on contract extensions until April.
Editor’s Note: Recently, a reader asked why I write stories on unions in disputes with their unionized staff. My response was this: “It’s very simple…because no one else is.”
While we post as many news articles as possible on LaborUnionNews.com, and there are many ‘journalists’ who cover news stories involving disputes between employers and unions, the vast majority of those ‘journalists’ refuse to cover stories involving unions (as employers) and their unionized staff. Frankly, it would save me a lot of time if they did.
