Reality Check: More than 93% of non-union autoworkers have not sign UAW cards
The UAW claims it has over 10,000 "signed union cards" — a fraction of what it needs to unionize 150,000 non-union autoworkers in the U.S.
Over 93 percent of non-union autoworkers in the U.S. have not signed union authorization cards, based on figures the UAW has shared at various times with the media over the last two months.
“Over 10,000 autoworkers across 13 non-union companies have signed union cards with the UAW, as momentum builds across the auto industry for better wages, benefits, and rights on the job,” the United Auto Workers announced on Monday.
While 10,000 “signed union cards” sounds impressive, it represents less than seven percent (6.7 percent, to be more precise) of the 150,000 auto workers at the 13 non-union automakers the UAW is targeting.
In addition, the more one looks at the various media reports, it appears nearly half of the UAW’s “signed union cards” are at only two of the 13 targeted non-union companies.
