Teamsters' Union Organizers Reject Unionization
Unless objections are filed and the NLRB issues a bargaining order, union organizers employed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will remain union-free.
Union organizers employed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters headquarters in Washington, D.C. have voted to reject unionization, according to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
Ballots were tallied on Thursday, March 21st, among the 34 eligible full-time and regular part-time Lead Organizers and International Organizers employed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters who voted in a secret-ballot election, the NLRB posted on its website.
Of the 34 eligible voters, only 29 actually voted and of those votes counted 16 voted against unionization and 12 voted for unionization, while one vote was challenged, the NLRB’s posting states.
The union that had tried to unionize the Teamsters organizers was the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, Local 32035, which is an affiliate of The News Guild, Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO, CLC, and represents a number of union staffers throughout Washington, D.C.
Normally, once ballots are tallied, objections may be filed within seven days. If no objections are filed, the election will be certified by the NLRB.
However, if objections are filed, the NLRB will normally investigate the objections and, if warranted, may hold a hearing to determine whether or not the objections have merit.
Ironically, if the union files objections against the Teamsters—which is the employer—and the objections are found to be meritorious, it is possible that the NLRB could require the Teamsters to bargain with the union, despite the majority organizers’ rejection of unionization.
