Three More Starbucks Stores Unionize
Three locations were in New York state unionized, but the vote counts may have been closer than expected.
On Wednesday, the National Labor Relations Board counted ballots cast in three separate elections in New York State and all three locations voted to unionize, reports WIVB.com.
The locations are in Cheektowaga, Amherst and Depew. Although the union won all three locations and tweeted its victories, unlike the lopsided vote in Mesa, Arizona last month, the vote counts may have been closer than the union organizers expected.
This brings the total to six unionized stores out of the approximate 9,000 stores nationwide.
WIVB.com reports:
The Walden Avenue and Anderson Road store came to a vote of 8-7, and Sheridan Drive and N. Bailey Avenue location in Amherst unionized with a 15-12 decision. Two ballots at the Amherst store were contested.
Employees at the Starbucks in Depew on Transit Road and French Road also unionized with a vote of 15-12, two ballots there were contested. [Emphasis added.]
Since Starbucks Workers United—an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union—began its efforts to unionize Starbucks, the union has filed petitions with the NLRB to hold elections at more than 100 Starbucks stores across 25 states.
