UAW President calls GM's latest proposal 'insulting.'—"Stop wasting our members’ time."
With a potential strike looming in the auto industry a week away, United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain warned on Wednesday that the union plans to go on strike against any Detroit Three automaker that hasn’t reached a new deal by the time contracts expire next week.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Fain did report some progress in the negotiations, saying the union will meet Thursday with General Motors (GM) to hear the company’s response to the UAW’s economic demands.
However, by Thursday afternoon, the UAW released a statement on ‘X’ (the social media app formerly known as Twitter) calling GM’s latest proposal “insulting.”
"After refusing to bargain in good faith for the past six weeks, only after having federal labor board charges filed against them, GM has come to the table with an insulting proposal that doesn’t come close to an equitable agreement for America’s autoworkers. GM either doesn’t care or isn’t listening when we say we need economic justice at GM by 11:59pm on September 14th.
The clock is ticking. Stop wasting our members’ time. Tick tock."
If the UAW does strike all three automakers, depending on its length, the economic impact could be a huge blow to the economy.
