Business agents employed by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), Local 30 in San Diego, California have voted two to one to decertify their union, the Communications Workers of America (CWA), according to a recent National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) posting.
Union business agents are usually employed to negotiate and administer contracts on behalf of employees of other employers.
At the OPEIU Local 30 office, according to the NLRB, two of the three business agents employed by the union voted to decertify the CWA on April 17, 2024.
The election only included the business agents, and excluded all other employees. It is not known whether or not the OPEIU’s other employees are represented by a union.
Now that the union business agents are no longer unionized, if the election is certified, they cannot vote to have another union represent them for at least one year due to the NLRB’s one-year election bar.
