Biden is dispatching Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su and White House Auto Advisor Gene Sperling to Detroit
Hours after the United Auto Workers (UAW) called nearly 13,000 members out on strike against Detroit Three automakers, President Joe Biden held a press conference to announce that he would be sending Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su and White House auto adviser Gene Sperling to Detroit “to offer their full support for the parties in reaching a contract.”
Biden urged the auto companies to offer contracts that rewarded UAW workers for the sacrifices they’ve made.
“Workers deserve a fair share of the benefits they help create for an enterprise,” the President stated.
“The companies have made some significant offers,” Biden said. “But, I believe they should go further to ensure that record corporate profits should ensure record contracts.”
At midnight on Thursday, the UAW called on members at three plants to “stand up and strike” as part of its "‘Targeted Strike Strategy,’ vowing that, if there if the auto companies do not meet the UAW’s demands, more members at more plants would also be called on to strike.
