Despite Winning A Majority of Certification Elections, Union Win Rate Dropped In July
The number of certification elections was also down 28 percent
After several months of unions winning 80% of all certification elections, the union win rate dropped in July.
According to newly-released National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) data, in July, the union win rate for certification elections dropped to 64 percent.
In addition, the number of certification elections conducted and closed by the NLRB dropped more than 28 percent—from 142 in June to 102 in July.
Despite the drop in union win rates in July, the percentage of certification elections won by unions since the beginning of the NLRB’s fiscal year is at 72.8 percent, a slight dip from the nearly 74 percent in June.
July 2023 data:
In addition, in a year over year comparison from July 2022, both the total number of elections held, as well as the win rates are down from the same month last year.
July 2022 data:
Union certification election win rates by month in FY 2023
October: 72% win rate
November: 68% win rate
December: 63% win rate
January: 54% win rate
February: 88% win rate
March: 79% win rate
April: 80% win rate
May: 80% win rate
June: 80% win rate
July: 64% win rate
Though the NLRB offers no explanation for the drop in July win rates, like January’s win rates, the dip may only be a temporary setback for unions.
