From Peter List [aka ‘The Editor’]
1. Thank you.
First of all, thank you for being a subscriber to LaborUnionNews.com’s news digest.
In the short two months since launching LaborUnionNews.com, we’ve posted nearly 1,700 over 2,000 hand-curated, categorized, and archived labor union and workplace-related articles.
Update: It’s been more than two years and nearly 45,000 workplace-related articles posted since this was written.
In addition to the website, we’ve also created this newsfeed for subscribers to have news and other important workplace issues delivered into your email box, as well as the Labor Relations Radio podcast1 to do deeper dives into specific issues from both sides of the table2.
Some may think it’s a lot—and it is—however, there is a good reason why…
2. There’s a lot of information out there.
The reason we developed LaborUnionNews.com isn’t really a secret—but you may not know why. So, here it is.
Whether you’re on the employer side or the union side of the labor relations table, you’ve got to admit, these are fascinating times3 and things are changing almost daily.
Frankly, for a practitioner, there is a lot to keep up with these days.
Having been involved in labor relations (on both sides of the table, so to speak) for nearly four decades, there’s always been a lot of excellent resources regarding unions and labor relations. However…
3. Why not put them all in one place?
Years ago, I noticed that, if you wanted really good information, there was no single source of information and, frankly, I was hoping someone would come up with one.
In order to stay informed—whether you’re a HR leader, a labor-relations professional or a union agent—one would have to subscribe to a lot of different publications and pay a lot of money in order to keep up with current labor-related events.
For many, it is too costly to subscribe to all the necessary subscriptions to stay caught up on day-to-day labor issues. Plus, even if you were to subscribe to all the labor journals and newspapers across the country, you’d still end up short on information—not to mention an overabundance of emails clogging your inbox.
News aggregators are not new…but there’s nothing like this one.
News aggregators are nothing new. However, there has been no single source news aggregator devoted to the labor relations community…until we launched LaborUnionNews.com,
4. We’re not there yet.
We’re still tweaking things as we grow. Although we have several subscriptions to a number of the newspapers that provide union-related news, there are a few publications that, from a cost standpoint, are still too prohibitive for us to subscribe to in order to bring you even more news.
This is where you come in…
Power to the People—Croudsourcing and Crowdfunding LaborUnionNews.com.
5. The ‘ABCs’ on how you can help:
A. Give us feedback
First of all, we’d love your feedback. Drop us a comment below and tell us what you like and would like to see changed about LaborUnionNews.com. I can’t promise we’ll act on every suggestion, but we’ll try to do our best.
Second, although it’s not exactly crowdsourcing by definition, as we have at the top of every morning’s news digest, if you see a story we’ve missed, hit us up on the tip line. [Several of you have, and we appreciate it!] Or, if you think we should add a resource on our resources page, let us know.
B. Spread the word
If you like LaborUnionNews.com, and enjoy receiving the news digest every morning, share us with your colleagues.
C. Become a paid subscriber.
Crowdfunding is “the method of financing a business venture, project, or cause by collecting small monetary contributions from a large group of people through online platforms.”
One way to help LaborUnionNews.com deliver more in-depth coverage is to become a paid subscriber. $100 per year (or $8.33 per month) is probably the lowest price you’ll find for any news/professional trade publication. [If you know of one, let us know.]
By becoming a paid subscriber, you would have access to more news and features, and we would have the ability to give you more in-depth news and analysis.
Now that you know the not-so-secret secret behind LaborUnionNews.com, we hope that you’re enjoying it, as well as we hope you’ll help us expand.
Best regards,
Labor Relations Radio can be found on this Substack feed, on Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, Spotify, as well as other podcast platforms.
Although the first five episodes of Labor Relations Radio have been with individuals and group representatives explaining a variety of workplace and political issues from a free market perspective, we will be diversifying this, beginning next week.
Some of the recent events to keep track of include (but not limited to) the following: The Amazon and Starbucks campaigns, a multitude of union and non-union strikes, as well as the new NLRB with back-door card check, possible banning of mandatory meetings, and more.
Who runs this blog? I think transparency would be helpful. Practice what you preach please.
