UFCW Organizers, Representatives & Other Staff Petition To Decertify Their Union
Another case of union employees seeking to decertify their union.
In another case of workers employed by a labor union seeking to decertify their own union, employees of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Local 7 in Colorado have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to conduct and election on whether or not to decertify their union, the Federation of Agents & International Representatives (FAIR).
The petition, which was filed on Wednesday and is presumably supported by at least 30% of the bargaining unit, includes UFCW Local 7’s union’s organizers, representatives, accounting, secretaries, and information technician(s), while it excludes executive-board members, directors, supervisors (individual’s normally classified as ‘management’).
The Federation of Agents and International Representatives (FAIR), according to its website, was “created in 1973 by a courageous group of International Representatives of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.”
UFCW Local 7, which boasts of having 23,000 members in Colorado and Wyoming employed in supermarkets, packing houses, food processing plants, barbers and cosmetologists, and healthcare facilities.
Last year, UFCW Local 7 engaged in a 10-day strike against the Kroger-owned King Soopers.
If the NLRB approves the decertification, barring any efforts to block the election, a NLRB-conducted election will likely take place within the month or two and the organizers, representatives and other employees of UFCW Local 7 can determine by secret-ballot whether they wish to remain unionized or work without union representation.
